Patient Education & FAQs

Empowering patients with knowledge. Discover answers to the most common questions regarding kidney health, inspired by global standards of care.

What are the early warning signs of Kidney Disease?

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is often called a "silent disease" because many people do not experience symptoms until significant kidney damage has occurred. However, early signs you should never ignore include:

  • Changes in Urination: Needing to urinate more often (especially at night), or noticing foamy/bubbly urine, which can indicate protein leakage.
  • Fatigue and Weakness: A buildup of toxins and waste products in the blood can cause severe tiredness.
  • Swelling (Edema): When kidneys can't properly filter fluid, it builds up in your legs, ankles, feet, or around your eyes.
  • Dry and Itchy Skin: This can signal an imbalance of minerals and nutrients in your blood.

If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of kidney issues, regular screening via blood (eGFR) and urine tests is crucial.

Who needs a Kidney Transplant and what is the recovery process like?

A kidney transplant is typically recommended for patients with end-stage renal failure (Stage 5 CKD) who are either on dialysis or approaching the need for it (eGFR below 15-20). It offers a significant survival advantage and better quality of life compared to long-term dialysis.

Recovery Timeline:

  • Hospital Stay: Usually a few days, depending on how quickly the new kidney begins functioning.
  • At Home: Full recovery takes about 6 weeks. During this time, strenuous physical activity and driving should be avoided.
  • Medication: You will need to strictly adhere to anti-rejection (immunosuppressive) medications for the lifetime of the transplanted organ.

Post-transplant, you will have regular follow-ups to monitor kidney function and adjust medications.

What does eGFR mean and how is my kidney function measured?

eGFR stands for estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate. It is the most accurate way to measure how well your kidneys are filtering waste from your blood.

The laboratory calculates your eGFR using the level of creatinine (a waste product from muscle breakdown) in your blood, along with your age, sex, and body size.

  • Normal: An eGFR of 90 or higher is generally considered normal.
  • CKD Indication: An eGFR below 60 for three months or more indicates Chronic Kidney Disease.
  • Kidney Failure: An eGFR of 15 or below indicates kidney failure, requiring treatment like dialysis or transplant.
What are the dietary guidelines for managing Chronic Kidney Disease?

Diet plays a vital role in slowing the progression of kidney disease and managing symptoms. While a customized plan from a renal dietitian is best, general guidelines include:

  • Control Sodium (Salt): Limit processed foods and added salt to help control blood pressure and reduce fluid buildup (swelling).
  • Monitor Protein: Eating too much protein forces your kidneys to work harder. The right amount depends on your CKD stage and whether you are on dialysis.
  • Manage Potassium and Phosphorus: As kidney function declines, these minerals can build up in the blood dangerously. You may need to limit foods like bananas, oranges, potatoes, dairy, and dark colas.
  • Fluid Intake: In advanced stages or if on dialysis, you may need to restrict your daily fluid intake.
